GM Mustard UPSC
What is DMH 11?
Dhara Mustard Hybrid (DMH-11) is an indigenously developed transgenic mustard. it’s a genetically modified variant of herbicide Tolerant (HT) mustard.
Dhara Mustard Hybrid- 11( DMH- 11), was developed by Deepak Pental of the Centre for Genetic Manipulation of Crop Plants (CGMCP), Delhi University, through transgenic technology, in 2002.
DMH — eleven was created through transgenic technology, primarily involving the alien genes Bar, Barnase and Barstar gene systems.

These are (‘barnase’ and ‘barstar’) isolated from a soil bacterium known as Bacillus amyloliquefaciens that modify breeding of high-yielding commercial mustard hybrids.
The First sequence, selected as “barnase,” produces a macromolecule that reduces spore production and makes the plant it’s incorporated into male-sterile.
Then, this plant is crossed with a viable parental line and carries the second “barstar” gene, that prevents the barnase gene from functioning.
